Personal Branding for the camera shy
I understand that camera shyness can be a real hurdle before a headshot/personal branding session. It’s something I really struggle with. But please don’t worry, there are ways to navigate it!
Here are some tips to help you overcome camera shyness before your session:
Before the shoot:
Mentally prepare:
Acknowledge your feelings: Allow yourself to feel nervous, it’s normal. Don’t judge yourself for feeling shy.
Reframe your thinking: Instead of focusing on negative thoughts, remind yourself that this is an opportunity to create a positive and professional image.
Practice positive affirmations: Repeat things like “I am confident and capable” or “This is going to be fun.”
Visualise success: Imagine yourself relaxed and confident during the shoot, nailing your poses and expressions.
Choose the right photographer:
Look for someone who specialises in headshots: They’ll have experience working with nervous clients and can guide you through the process.
Read their reviews: See what other clients say about their experience and personality.
Schedule a consultation: Chat with the photographer beforehand to discuss your concerns and expectations.
Can’t recommend Kathryn enough. I hate having my photo taken but she made the experience fun and personal. I loved having a library of images to choose from and the photography was brilliant quality. I feel confident advertising my brand with her images to add a bespoke professional edge. – Lisa Barry Online
Prepare your appearance:
Choose an outfit that makes you feel confident and comfortable: Avoid anything too tight or revealing.
Get a good night’s sleep: Being well-rested will help you feel more relaxed and energized.
Practice your expressions: Experiment with different smiles and poses in the mirror beforehand.
Consider professional hair and makeup: This can help you feel more polished and put-together.
During the shoot:
Focus on the photographer’s instructions: Don’t overthink things, just follow their guidance.
Take breaks when needed: Don’t be afraid to ask for a few minutes to collect yourself if you’re feeling overwhelmed.
Trust the photographer: They’re there to help you look your best, so relax and let them do their job.
Focus on your breath: Deep breathing exercises can help you calm your nerves and stay grounded.
Think about something positive: Imagine yourself meeting your dream client or nailing a job interview.
Remember:
It’s okay to not be perfect: The photographer is there to capture your natural personality, not a flawless image.
The most important thing is to be yourself: Authenticity always shines through in photos.
Focus on having fun: The more relaxed you are, the better your photos will be.
Bonus tip: Practice taking selfies! This can help you get comfortable being in front of the camera and experiment with different expressions.
